Challenge
The client already had strong brand recognition and a lot of existing content. But most of their organic traffic came from branded searches, meaning people already knew who they were.
The bigger opportunity was reaching business owners earlier, when they were searching for services like payroll, HR support, workers’ comp, employee benefits, or PEOs in general.
That meant taking a closer look at what they already ranked for, where they were sitting just outside the top results, what topics were missing, and where existing content could be updated or better connected to their services.
The challenge was to grow the client’s non-branded search presence and bring in more qualified prospects who hadn’t found them yet.
Strategy
We built an ongoing SEO and content program around the client's core services and the needs of its different audiences.
That included:
- Developing a keyword strategy around high-value PEO, payroll, HR, benefits, workers' compensation, and business-owner searches
- Creating search-driven content based on keyword opportunity and customer intent
- Optimizing existing content rather than relying exclusively on net-new publishing
- Strengthening internal linking between blogs, resources, and core service pages
- Optimizing headings and on-page structure around priority searches
- Using search behavior and data to identify FAQs and supporting questions
- Monitoring keyword performance and using those insights to continuously adjust the content strategy
Each piece of content was created to support the broader customer journey and provide potential customers with a natural path from a search query to the client's services.
Results
Organic search became a significant acquisition channel for the client.
Qualified leads from organic search increased 136% year over year, and revenue from organic traffic increased 97%, reaching $29.6 million.
Content performance grew alongside it. The 44 blog posts published over the course of a year generated 14,574 views, a 53% increase year over year, along with 61 website submissions.
And the momentum continued year after year.
Organic visibility continued to increase 46.7% quarter over quarter, reaching more than 4.8 million impressions. Organic traffic grew another 24.5%, while organic search generated 1,871 new contacts, up 31.6% from the previous quarter.
But one of the most important improvements went beyond just traffic. Lead quality also increased.
The organic lead-to-opportunity conversion rate reached 25.25%, representing a 65% year-over-year increase.
Organic Search Became More Than a Traffic Channel
The strategy was built to increase visibility for the searches that mattered to the business, bring more qualified prospects into the site, and create clear paths from informational content to the client's services.
Over time, organic search became an important part of the entire customer journey, from initial discovery through conversion.
"They know their stuff, they care about the results, and the numbers speak for themselves. We couldn't be happier with the work they've done for us."
